Most Brits are familiar with the classic spotted dick pudding.

This quintessentially British sweet is a steamed treat, traditionally crafted with suet and mixed dried fruit, often accompanied by a generous helping of custard. While it’s a staple in the UK, those from further afield might not be acquainted with this particular pud.

That was certainly ‘true’ for an American now residing in Britain, who decided to embark on a culinary adventure to sample the dessert for the very first time but his experience didn’t quite go as planned.

The adventurous foodie, known by his YouTube handle @kjordy, uploaded a video documenting his quest to taste spotted dick at a local British pub.

He titled his upload: “American trying weird British foods,” inviting viewers to join him as he declared: “Come with me as I try spotted dick for the first time.”, reports the Mirror.

In an effort to enlighten his audience about the dessert, he explained: “No, it’s not what you’re thinking… spotted dick is a British dessert.”

He went on to express his genuine curiosity about the dish, saying: “I’m just generally curious to try it out.”

The footage then follows him as he enters one pub and inquires if they serve the pudding, only to be informed that they “don’t do it”. Not easily discouraged, he ventures to another venue, but once more receives a negative response, admitting to his viewers: “It’s not looking good.”

Yet, he remained determined, exclaiming: “I won’t stop until I get spotted dick.”

His determination was palpable as he revealed to his followers that after contacting ‘about 12 pubs’, the result was either being hung up on or learning that they didn’t offer the elusive dessert.

He bypassed the traditional baking route and instead popped into his local Sainsbury’s to grab the dessert. “I’ve been told to eat it with custard,” he remarked. Upon locating it in the store, he excitedly informed his followers: “Spotted dick has been acquired.”

Once home, he described the dessert as resembling “looked like a muffin” and proceeded to warm it up in the microwave. He shared with his audience that it ‘smelt pretty good’, but upon tasting, he conceded it “wasn’t that good”.

However, he did note that the addition of custard improved the taste significantly, making it “10 times better”.

In an attempt to relate to his American fans, he likened the dessert to being “almost like a pound cake”.

The post was a hit among his fans, amassing over 1,800 likes. Yet, some pointed out a glaring error in the comments section, with one user exclaiming: “What you purchased was panettone.”

This sentiment was echoed by another who confirmed: “That’s a panettone,” while a third humorously observed: “Dude went in for British and came out with Italian.”

Another follower was taken aback by his decision not to heat the custard, commenting: “That was panettone but I am obliged to say, COLD CUSTARD IS MAD.”
