BECKLEY, W.Va. – A famous battle march in Southern West Virginia is being highlighted during its 250th anniversary.

The Battle of Point Pleasant Ceremonial Lantern was presented today in a convoy along Col. Andrew Lewis’s march from Greenbrier County to the Battle of Point Pleasant during the Revolutionary War.

Raleigh County received its lantern, certificate and West Virginia Semiquincentennial Proclamation today, presented by Randall Reid-Smith, Cabinet Secretary for the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History.

Raleigh County Commission President Greg Duckworth, Raleigh County Commissioner Daniel J. Hall, and Raleigh County Assessor Linda Sumner accepted the items from Reid-Smith on the Raleigh County Courthouse Lawn.

The lantern convoy also made stops at four other courthouses along the route, including stops in Greenbrier and Fayette counties.

Lewis was a colonel in the Virginia militia during the French and Indian War and was a brigadier general in the Revolutionary War.

The highlight of his career was the victory in the Battle of Point Pleasant in Dunmore’s War in 1774.
