Hamilton Accies Women kid Olivia McStay played a key role as Scotland Women’s Under-17s reached their European Championships Round Two qualifiers with three straight wins at Broadwood this month.

The young Scots beat Iceland 2-0 at the Cumbernauld stadium on October 1, followed that up with a late 1-0 over Northern Ireland to qualify, and added style with a 2-1 victory against Poland on Monday of this week.

Accies boss Robert Watson was able to see the on-loan Celtic defender in action during two of the three games, and is delighted with the recognition, both for McStay, 16, and the club.

He said: “Olivia played in the team that kept a clean sheet on Wednesday, and came on as a half-time sub when the team were losing, but they managed to turn the result around.

“I’m very pleased for her, and that can only mean good things for us if she’s playing well for Scotland.

“Olivia will get her opportunity with us in the next few weeks, and it’s up to her to take that.

“But she has given herself a great platform. I’m sure confidence will be high, having come out of the 17s camp with three wins.

“There are a number of players in that squad who came through Accies at some point – Kate Fraser and Darra Dawson both played in the back-line over the three games.

“One of the things we pride ourselves on as a club is putting players on a platform to ultimately get a bigger move, and get international recognition if possible.

“I’m really pleased for all three players.”
