THIS was the last photograph of serial Killer Peter Tobin which was revealed by the Sunday Mail in the weeks before his death.
One of Scotland’s worst serial killers, Tobin lay chained to a hospital bed whilst under guard and seriously ill in September 2022.
The state of Tobin’s health was first revealed by the Sunday Mail in October that year after we obtained a picture of the notorious serial killer in his hospital bed where he was described as being at “death’s door.”
The 76-year-old was receiving palliative care when he died in hospital on October 8, 2022.
His death came a month after a fall in a cell at HMP Edinburgh, where he was serving three life sentences for the murders of three young women.
Tobin was convicted for the murders of Polish student Angelika Kluk, 23, 15-year-old Vicky Hamilton and 18-year-old Dinah McNicol, between 2006 and 2007.
The sex offender, who is suspected over a number of other killings, fell within his cell at the jail.
A Fatal Accident Inquiry heard that Tobin died from pneumonia while suffering from prostate cancer and vascular disease.
Following a fatal accident inquiry (FAI) Sheriff Matthew Auchincloss concluded that the killer died of bronchopneumonia, a type of pneumonia that affects the bronchi in the lungs, generalised vascular disease, and prostate cancer.
In a published determination, Sheriff Matthew Auchincloss found no precautions could have been taken to avoid his death.
He wrote: “At the time of his death, Peter Tobin was a 76-year-old man who had been living with a number of serious health conditions. He suffered a fall in prison.
“Prison staff dealt with the situation appropriately and he was given appropriate medical care in hospital. Medical staff had expected Peter Tobin’s death given a decline after his injury and surgery, combined with his general frailty.”
The FAI into the death also heard that Tobin was diagnosed from dementia in December 2020, and suffered from a catalogue of health problems, including strokes, dizziness and chest pains.
The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) ordered the FAI, which is mandatory for any prisoners who die while in custody.
The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) released a statement which “welcomed” the FAI findings.
It came exactly 18 years after Tobin’s first appearance in Glasgow Sheriff Court for the murder of Angelika, whose body was hidden under St Patrick’s Church in Glasgow where he worked as a handyman.
In November 2007, the remains of Vicky Hamilton and Dinah McNicol who vanished in 1991 were found under the patio of Tobin’s “house of horrors” in Margate, Kent.
The Sunday Mail previously revealed that the serial killer was secretly cremated after his death and his ashes dumped at sea.
Tobin’s funeral took place at a crematorium without any service.
The cremation was organised by Edinburgh City Council after Tobin’s death.
The council took over the funeral arrangements after no next of kin came forward to claim his body.
