Holidaying in Spain is set to become a bit more of a hassle – and it’s not going down well with Brits.

Earlier this week, reports emerged that Brits jetting off to Spain will soon need to supply 43 pieces of information when checking into their accommodation, due to new rules kicking in from December.

The contentious new law has been likened to Big Brother-style snooping, as it ramps up the amount of personal data logged when holidaymakers check into a hotel, flat or rent a vehicle. The Spanish government defended the rule, stating the tighter requirements will enhance safety by allowing the Ministry of Interior to access details on who, when and where both domestic and international guests are staying, assisting in tracking terrorists and organised crime syndicates.

However, since the news broke, Brits have taken to social media to voice their worries about the regulation, with many expressing disbelief. Benidorm party planner Frank, known on TikTok as @frankthestagman, recently spoke out about the issue in a video.

He warned “as soon as you arrive at the airports”, you’ll be asked to complete a form and provide details about yourself. Frank highlighted that much of the information you’ll need to give will be “very personal”.

Frank added: “I’ve got to be honest with you, I can’t believe we’ve got to a stage in life where anybody can actually ask for this type of information. Information they are wanting from you, which you will have to give, is – well, there’s a lot of it – but these are the basics.

“These are the ones that you’re more likely to not want to handover. Your full name, your full address, your credit card information. They’re also going to be wanting your phone number, they’re going to want to know where you’re going to be staying and also your passport and driving licence information.

“If you fail to provide any of this information, and there is more, you can be fined up to 30,000 euros. Wow.”

Frank also noted the law was meant to be introduced this month, but it’s been put back to December 2. He predicted that many would “disagree” with the changes, which will affect everyone, regardless of their opinion.

With thousands of views since its release, the video has ignited quite the discussion among viewers. The general consensus among Brits isn’t looking too positive.

Various individuals expressed their concerns, with one remarking: “It’s going to really put the stops for loads of people – too much hassle for a bit of sun.”

Meanwhile another declared: “Won’t be going.” A third wrote: “That’s a shame. We’ve been to Finestrat for the last two years (10 of us), popping into Benidorm as well.

“We were just about to book again. We’ve just discussed it, and we are not booking now.”

Meanwhile, a fourth commented: “As much as we love Benidorm, and have for many years, sadly this will put me off. If more people feel the same way, tourist figures drop, which I fear they will.”
