A British tattoo artist has expressed concerns about companies promoting financing options for tattoos, cautioning it’s “not worth getting in debt over”.

Pippa Echo, who works at Holier Than Thou tattoo shop in Manchester, is well-known for her stunning designs, ranging from Pokémon-themed tattoos to floral artwork. While she encourages clients to invest in her designs, she strongly advises against taking on debt to do so.

The artist, who shares her work and thoughts online under the handle @pippa.ink, criticised services that offer financing plans for tattoos. Although the idea of splitting the cost of an expensive tattoo may seem appealing, these plans often include significant interest rates. Additionally, missing payments can negatively impact one’s credit score.

In a video which garnered more than 4,500 views, Pippa explained her stance: “I’m seeing a lot of things on Instagram about paying for tattoos with finance. As much as us tattoo artists need you to spend money on tattoos, we shouldn’t be promoting something that could potentially get you in debt.

“If you do really want to get that sleeve finished or that back piece done, consider getting a credit card with a lower interest rate, talk to your bank, or speak to your artist.”

Pippa also reminded tattoo enthusiasts that larger designs, often completed in multiple sessions, should be paid for in instalments. She continued: “Too many times have I had clients tell me they’ve paid upfront for a big tattoo, only to have the artist move studios, relocate, or even worse, disappear entirely.

“Then they’re left with an unfinished tattoo. If in doubt, talk to your tattoo artist and work with them to find a solution. It’s not worth getting into debt.”

In the caption of her post, Pippa reiterated her message: “Please live within your means. Tattoos are not worth getting yourself in debt for.”

Her followers on Instagram were quick to support her viewpoint. One commenter wrote: “Love this! Such an important message! A good tattoo artist (like yourself) will work with you to find a solution. Well said.” Another added: “Love this.”
