BLUEFIELD, Va. -A new theater production is getting ready to debut this week at Bluefield University. While this famous musical was first shown in the sixties, its story is even older, taking inspiration from the pages of the Bible.

It’s called “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and is an adaptation of the biblical story of Joseph and the coat of many colors. However, this colorful retelling will include anachronistic costumes, large dance numbers, and music in a variety of genres from country to reggae.

We spoke to Finn Smith, the actor playing the titular character of Joseph, and to Charles Reese the Bluefield Youth and Community Theatre’s artistic director, who both say they’ve been wanting to bring this show to life for some time. They encourage the community to come see the show and see the story of Joseph in a way that they’ve likely never seen before.

“It does put it in a new light with me, although I had been familiar with this before. It’s opened up so many new doors and it’s really opened my mind to a lot of new things,” says Smith.

“Well, I just think it makes it more… accessible… more easy to lose yourself in. It’s just a fun, upbeat, family-oriented kind of show,” says Reese

This is also the official debut of the newly renamed “Bluefield Youth and Community Theatre,” with more community involvement planned for future productions.

If you would like to check out this show for yourself, there are showings on Thursday, October 17th at 7:30 pm, on Friday, October 18th, at 7:30, on Saturday, October 19th, at 3:00 pm and 7:30 pm, and on Sunday, October 20th, at 3:00 pm.
