PITT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN/Gray News) – Deputies say a 5-year-old North Carolina boy is dead after his 6-year-old sibling accidentally shot him in the head. The victim’s great-grandfather is facing charges in the case.

Karter Rosenboro, 5, was found shot in the head last Tuesday night in a home just north of Greenville. The Pitt County Sheriff’s Office says the boy died after being taken to ECU Health Medical Center, according to WITN.

Deputies say Karter‘s 6-year-old sibling accidentally shot him.

The boy’s great-grandfather, 72-year-old Rayfield Ruffin, was charged Friday with not storing the firearm properly to protect children. He lives at the home where the shooting occurred, according to his arrest warrant.

Pitt County Schools says Karter was a kindergarten student at Northwest Elementary School, where crisis response teams were present last week.

The family set up a GoFundMe page to help with funeral expenses.

“Karter was a happy 5-year-old with a bright smile and loved by so many,” the site read.

Ruffin was released after posting a $2,000 unsecured bond.
