Gartcairn gaffer Mick Dunlop hailed his side for making it five wins on the spin after a 5-1 win at Benburb on Saturday took them up to fifth in the table.

The Airdrie-based side are in fine form and are now unbeaten in their last six games following a comfortable win at New Tinto Park in the West of Scotland Premier Division.

Doubles from Kami Krol and Andy Stirling, plus a late strike from Ian McShane did the damage for Dunlop’s men.

And he said: “I think when you come away from home in this league and win 5-1 then you’ve played well because you don’t get things easy in this league. I’m absolutely delighted with the result and I can’t ask for any more from the players.

“I said beforehand that we were the only game in the league on Saturday so it was important to take the chance when it comes your way. You get three points and it moves you up a few positions in the table. That’s exactly what it did.

“Benburb started better than us and we were a bit slack with our passing. Their front two were a threat but from 20 minutes onwards we settled down and started to play some good stuff.

“We got a two-goal lead at half-time, which was great, but we knew they’d come out and have a go in the second half.

“They got a penalty and made it 2-1 so it became a different game.

“But Stirlo scores a great goal for us, shows real quality with a great finish outside the box, and that just settled us down again. From that point on, we were in control of the game and got another couple of goals.”

On their recent run of form, he added: “Fair play to the players because over the last two months that is a lot of games we’ve won now. I challenged them recently to win as many games as we can up to the Christmas break and see where we are.

“We’ve played a couple of more games than other teams but it is points on the board.”

`Cairn are in Junior Cup action this weekend when they host Arthurlie in a third round tie, which is a 2.30pm kick-off at MTC Park.
