McDonald’s fans have been left disappointed after the highly-anticipated return of a classic burger failed to hit the spot.

For a limited time only, the McRib burger is back after disappearing from McDonald’s menus almost a decade ago. The burger consists of a pork patty lathered in BBQ sauce and garnished with pickled and onions, served in a homestyle bun. It was originally launched in 1981 and quickly became a firm favourite, with some hailing it “one of the best McDonald’s burgers of all time”.

The McRib last appeared on menus in December 2014, leaving desperate fans to campaign for its return via social media comments and online petitions.

Many had high hopes for the burger’s grand return today (October 16), but mixed reviews across social media have left fans wondering if McDonald’s bit off more than it could chew with the much-hyped relaunch.

Taking to Facebook, one user wrote: “What have you done to this, it was a beautiful, it was tasty, it was filling. You turned it dry, sauce is wrong and there is something wrong with the meat. This is not the same McRib that was served 10yrs ago.”

Another added: “Don’t bother ordering it – looks like the left overs from breakfast”, while one asked: “Can I get my money back?”

Several disgruntled customers accused McDonald’s of being stingy with the BBQ sauce and garnishes that made the original McRib so flavourful. One noted: “Was so looking forward to having a McRib after 10 years. About 5 pieces of chopped onion in each, 2 slices of gherkin & a tiny amount of sauce, asked for extra sauce because it was so dry & they gave us BBQ dip pots to pour into it. Disappointing!”

Another user agreed: “Don’t think that the staff are making it correctly. Tiny bit of sauce, little bit of onion and pickles.”

Some disappointed fans have advised others to look elsewhere for a cheaper and more reliable alternative, drawing comparisons with Rustlers microwavable BBQ rib burgers.

One wrote: “Well that was a McSad. I genuinely think the Rustlers one is so much better. After all that hype what a let down”, while another advised: “I’ll just buy a Rustlers. Same thing, 1/3 of the price.”

It’s not all bad news for McDonald’s bosses though, as others insist that the return of the McRib burger was worth the wait. One gushed: “Not disappointed at all, Absolutely delicious!!”

Filming a live taste-test, another told his followers: “Oh my god. Can we just take a moment, wow – it is unreal. Run to McDonald’s now, it’s emotional. That’s Christmas dinner sorted.”
