A Cape Cod mother and her 1-year-old daughter have died after a fire broke out at a vacation home in upstate New York, state police announced Tuesday.

Shannon and John Hubbard, of Brewster, Mass., were vacationing with their two young kids in Clinton, some 50 miles east of Syracuse, when a fire erupted in their rental home late Sunday night.

When first responders arrived at the Clinton Hollow Rd. residence around 10:40 p.m., the person who called 911 stated that Shannon Hubbard, her 3-year-old son and 1-year-old daughter were trapped on the second floor of the home, state police said in a news release.

Entry into the residence was only possible after members of the Pleasant Valley Fire Department arrived to assist. With the extra help, responders managed to extricate Hubbard from the residence.

Hubbard, her husband and their two kids were rushed to local hospitals.

Both the father and the 3-year-old boy were transported to Westchester Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Shannon Hubbard and their baby daughter, Margaret “Maggie” Hubbard, were taken to Vassar Hospital and Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital respectively, where they were later pronounced dead.

The 35-year-old mother worked as a preschool teacher in the Monomoy Regional School District.

On Monday, Monomoy Superintendent Scott Carpenter informed the community about “the passing of Shannon (Waldron) Hubbard in a family tragedy,” saying the loss will “undoubtedly be shocking and painful for our school community.”

John Hubbard, 39, worked as a patrolman for the Dennis Police Department.

In a message shared on social media Wednesday, Dennis Police Chief John Brady said the department was “mourning this heartbreaking news.”

“Patrolman Hubbard is a valued member of our department and community, and more importantly, our friend,” Brady wrote. “We extend our deepest sympathies to him and his family.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, said Major Kathryne Rohde, with the New York State Police.
