An electricity substation serving Wishaw will be upgraded if North Lanarkshire Council agrees.

Scottish Power Energy Networks has requested planning permission to overhaul its substation in Gowkthrapple, which will also involve building a new access road and fencing.

The development would see the existing substation expanded with new equipment installed on currently empty land at the site, primarily in the form of a 132 kilovolt circuit breaker.

Scottish Power Energy Networks is a distribution and transmission network operator responsible for supplying electricity to homes and businesses, owning and maintaining a network of overhead lines and underground cables which spans Central and Southern Scotland, North Wales, Merseyside, Cheshire and North Shropshire.

In 2021, SP Energy Networks successfully completed a £28million refurbishment to its Wishaw substation.

The substation is a key point within the transmission network in central and southern Scotland and these upgrades and new equipment will allow it to operate more efficiently.

The project was completed in stages, while the substation continued to operate and keep power flowing.

Speaking following the completion of the work, Pearse Murray, SP Transmission Director at SP Energy Networks said: “Wishaw substation is a key hub within our transmission network in Scotland and large investments such as this ensure that we not only continue to future-proof the electricity network, but also play our part in supporting the country’s move to net zero emissions.

“As we continue that transition to a greener society, we are always looking for innovative ways we can be more environmentally friendly with our work.

“The offsetting of our plastic waste in road surfacing has many benefits and we hope to roll this out wider among upcoming upgrades and investments in other locations.”
