A car servicing garage in Rutherglen is helping the environment by cutting down on plastic waste thanks to new smart packaging for the motor oil it uses.

Independent garage group D&G Autocare has been established two decades and operates 18 garages which carry out MOTs and servicing. It recently embraced a move to ExxonMobil’s innovative oil-in-a-box system.

All of their garages including the one at Shawfield Retail & Trade Park are now using the Mobil Boxx product, a packaging solution that uses less unrecyclable waste, needs less storage space, and is more convenient and cleaner than conventionally packaged oil.

The 20 litre Boxx containers consist of 85 per cent less plastic than a traditional 20 litre pail, and also have other benefits. In contrast to 208 litre drums which are normally used in the garage, they are much lighter and easier to handle.

With no additional pumping system required, as well as sealed packaging, there’s less chance of oil being contaminated by foreign objects, or of leaking onto garage forecourts – saving on the need for harsh cleaning chemicals.

D&G Autocare Operations Director, Pete Wood said: “Along with the fact that Boxx generates significantly less waste, which helps to lower our carbon footprint, Mobil is very much the Rolls Royce of the oil world, a high-quality product for our customers’ vehicles. We have come up with the slogan “At your Service – your fill is Mobil.”

“Feedback so far, from our mechanics who have been using Mobil Boxx on a daily basis, has been very positive,” added Pete. “Mobil provide plenty of information and support on how the product can be safely installed and used in a garage.”

According to Pete, D&G Autocare, have always been ahead of the curve when it comes to environmental responsibility.

“We have solid working partnerships with a number of fully licensed waste management companies,” he said. “We are very proud of the fact that, in 2010, before it became law, we were one of the first companies in the UK to segregate all of our waste to ensure that only a minimum was going to landfill.”

Used oil extracted from vehicles during servicing is recycled and refined into new lubricating oils, a process that produces 30 per cent less carbon emissions when compared to refining crude oil. End of life tyres are recycled to make new products, create energy for the home, and for electric vehicles.

“Old metal such as brake components, springs, or exhausts, are melted down into raw components, to make anything from bridges, to new brakes components, to new springs & exhausts.

Elaine Friel, of Moove Lubricants said: “D&G Autocare is to be commended for its environmental initiatives. It demonstrates that a busy garage network can still put environmental initiatives at the very heart of its operation, with no compromise to its customers, who, in this case, are benefitting with a market leading oil.”
