A moving tribute has been paid to Liam Payne on the London Underground. The One Direction singer has died at the age of 31.

Fans and people across the music world have been mourning Liam’s loss after he fell to his death in Argentina overnight. Radio 1 Breakfast presenter Greg James summed up what many are feeing when he told listeners it was “unbearably sad news” for fans.

Tube commuters are today also seeing tributes from the underground poets All on The Board, who came to fame during Covid and often post moving or funny comments on Underground information white boards for commuters. Around five million journeys are made on the Underground every day.

Titled Liam Payne, 1993 – 2024, their message says: “Rest in peace Liam Payne. You will be forever loved, always missed and never forgotten. Sending so much love to those who loved you, your family, your friends, your One Direction brothers and the Directioners, and so much love to your son Bear.”

The UK Foreign Office has said it is in touch with authorities in Argentina. Liam was dating Kate Cassidy, a US influencer, and had a child with Girls Aloud’s Cheryl Cole.

Together, Cole and Payne had a son called Bear in 2017. As part of the boy band One Direction, which formed in 2010 on the X Factor, he became part a successful band alongside his bandmates Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik.

Local police said the singer fell from the third floor of a hotel in Argentina’s capital, Buenos Aires, on Wednesday evening (October 16) and suffered “extremely serious injuries”. It is not yet clear exactly what happened but an investigation has now been launched.

The band have not yet released a statement. However, Harry’s mum, Anne Twist, simply posted a broken heart emoji to her Instagram feed with the caption: “Just a boy…”

Outside the hotel where he was saying, at the Casa Sur, fans have gathered and held an impromptu vigil to pay their respects to someone they had grown up with and whose music they had come to love.
