LINDSIDE, W.Va. -Brett Mahon is a sixteen-year-old Junior at James Monroe High School who has been playing the guitar and singing since he can remember.

Growing up around music and be taught by family, people knew at his young age Mahon was going to go places.

“I’ve seen him from the beginning stages of playing the guitar all the way to where he is now. He’s actually was a part of mine and my wife’s band growing up and he did a fantastic job with percussion. Essentially whatever he touches as long when he’s got his mind to it, he’s able to be successful with it,” Seth Elmore, Band Director at JMHS.

Making the decision to send in an audition for the FFA talent competition landed Mahon a spot to compete in the National FFA Convention and Expo as the only West Virginian and 1 of 44 contestants. While this huge opportunity is something that doesn’t come around for most, Mahon knows where he started.

“I started playing when I was six years old. I just always grew up around music. It’s always pretty much been my thing. Mom and dad played when I was little. I grew up playing in churches and it’s always been around for me,” said Brett Mahon, Junior at JMHS.

Mahon leans on his family for support whether it is asking his mom what song to sing to his dad helping him set up. During the competition musicians will be judged on preparation, delivery, engagement, entertainment value and technical ability.

Mahon first performed at Glenville State and has opened for bands such as Shenandoah and Confederate Railroad.

The competition starts next Tuesday October 22nd.
