Motherwell have been dealt a major blow with news that captain Paul McGinn has been ruled out with a thigh tear for a “significant period of time”.

Boss Stuart Kettlewell says there are players who are returning to the fold following their own recovery, but McGinn picked up a knock in training.

It’s believed the 33-year-old was striking a ball at the time of the injury.

And he says while it’s frustrating, there’s nothing they can do to stem the tide of injuries at Fir Park this season.

Kettlewell said: “We’ve got a bit of disappointment, we’ve lost Paul McGinn for a significant period of time with a muscle injury.

“It was completely innocuous, and very simply he’s going to miss a real good chunk. We will be more specific on that, but the fact of the matter is that we’re going to be without our captain.

“It’s a thigh injury, to be a wee bit more specific, striking the ball.. It looks as if he has a muscle tear, so he’s going to be out for a good period of time.”

When asked if the injury list was concerning, Kettlewell said: “I can’t do anything about it.

“I’ve spoken about it that many times. We ward against it, we work very closely with our sports science and medical staff, who for me are absolutely top-drawer, the guys are absolute masters of their trade.

“Sometimes that happens in football, sometimes you get injuries. We’ve tried to mitigate those circumstances, but sometimes it happens.

“The other injuries and long-termers are exactly where they need to be, just to clarify that.

“They’re moving along well, but obviously huge disappointment in us losing Paul.”
