BLUEFIELD, W.Va. -Halloween is a time where children dress up and load up on some candy. While it‘s meant to be a fun time, it’s also important for parents to stay aware.

Officers advise that you check your kids’ candy before letting them dig-in, adding you should also make sure your kids are always under supervision.

“For those who do the traditional trick or treating, just make sure you go with your kids. Don’t let them go house to house by themselves, especially when they’re very young. I know you can trust your kids, you know, when they get older, but especially when they’re very young,” said LT. Landon Hieatt, Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office.

In recent years, many choose to gather in a parking lot for trunk or treat events.

A Bluefield, West Virginia officer says that this form of trick or treating allows for more supervision and greater safety.

“We’ve done is try to make it a safer environment where you do get people outside of the roads. You don’t have people going house to house, some people may not want you to come to their house. So, it kind of alleviates that you get everybody in the same group where kids are safe, able to enjoy themselves and just really make it a good atmosphere if they’re out celebrating the holiday,” said Sgt. Hunter Browning, Bluefield WV Police Department.

The Bluefield Police Department is partnering with the Rescue Squad and on Halloween night to give out candy as well.

Sgt. Browning says it’s an event all the officers look forward to.
