The cast of Outlander recently shot their final seasons for the Starz show, revealing that filming on season eight had wrapped in an emotional update.

The stars of the historical fantasy show, which is Diana Gabaldon’s book series of the same name, bid poignant farewells on social media, leaving fans in tears.

Season 8 of the romance series, which will air sometime in 2025, will mark Outlander’s end after more than 10 years and over 100 episodes.

In the meantime, viewers are looking forward to seeing their favourite characters Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) return in the second part of season 7, which is just around the corner.

While they don’t have long to wait, some dedicated fans have been very busy with other projects – including an ambitious documentary dedicated to the show.

Outlander fan and IG fan page content creator Maria Terleckyj, who is one of two Executive Producers of the fan documentary, reached out to the Daily Record to provide an exclusive insight into the exciting new project.

Maria tells us that the idea for the Outlander Fan Documentary first came to Cynthia Dawn back in 2018, when she and a group of friends “decided that the connection and phenomenon of the Outlander community needed to be told”.

The friend group initially landed on a coffee table book filled with stories and photos celebrating the global friendships formed through the fandom, but they pivoted towards a feature-length documentary.

Maria, who joined the team in 2020, has interviewed fans around the world and helped Cynthia to raise funds to make their film happen.

She told us: “We aspire to be the collective voice of our one-of-a-kind, global Outlander fan community. Our goal is to weave together a visual journey, showcasing the joy, friendships, achievements, and healing that has taken place because of this story, and the community it has created.

“We will share stories of how the characters, books, and television series have, and continue to, enrich the lives of so many, because Diana Gabaldon challenged herself to write a novel. The result is a community that radiates love, loyalty, strength and resilience.”

The team of fans have since started an Indiegogo fundraising campaign with an aim to raise $10,000 to fund editing, marketing, and other expenses for the passion project.

Maria continued: “We want to show the ‘Outlander Effect’ on our global fandom and its impact on Scotland and its tourism.

“There will be one more Droughtlander after season 7B. Many fans are emotional about it. We’d like this documentary to be something for them to celebrate and to evoke heartwarming emotion.

“After countless fan interactions and interviews, the documentary has organically evolved to focus on topics such as: relationships and friendships, confidence and achievements, creativity and entrepreneurship, and lastly, overcoming trauma and hardships.

“In the end, our mission is to ‘tell the stories behind the story’. To show the enormous amount of positivity and healing that so many of us have had in our lives, all because of Outlander…”

Following the closure of Lionsgate+ in the UK, new episodes of Outlander will be available on Starz and to stream on Prime Video channel MGM+ from Sunday, November 22. You must be an Amazon Prime member before you can sign up for MGM+.
