Blind Big Brother star ‘lucky to be alive’ after falling on railway track

Former Big Brother star Dr Michael ‘Mikey’ Hughes, who’s blind, has revealed that he’s ‘lucky to be alive’ after falling onto train tracks.

In 2008, he took part in the ninth series of the reality TV show, which aired on Channel 4 at the time, before being rebooted on ITV last year.

Hughes – who was the first disabled contestant to compete on the programme – finished as the runner-up on the series, behind the winner Rachel Rice.

In a recent update, the 48-year-old explained how he accidentally fell on a railway track, and thankfully other people who were at the station stepped in to help him.

‘Lucky to be alive, I fell directly onto the train tracks at Hyndland station, a few bruises but nothing broken, on the tracks you will see my ear defenders that fell off and my white beret, they will get them later, very lucky to be alive, ta to station staff/ambulance,’ he wrote on X, tagging the account for ScotRail.

The Daily Record reported that Hughes was on his way to Partick in Glasgow ‘to cash in a bet after the first Big Brother eviction’.

He got off the train when he thought that they had arrived in Partick.

However, when he got off the train, he couldn’t find a wall beside the track at the station that he expected to find there.

‘I walked across the concourse and fell on to the tracks. Luckily, two passenger’s rushed over and helped me to get myself up before the next train came. It was a miracle I was not killed,’ he said, the publication reported.

The reality TV star added that he wants to make sure that the incident doesn’t put him off from travelling on his own again in the future.

‘I plan to go a lot slower, and let people help me in future,’ he shared.

‘I’ll make sure I keep my cane on the ground next time, rather than waving it about like a Harry Potter wand and I won’t always keep my ear defenders on now. It sure was a near-death experience.’

On X, several people reached out to Hughes to express their relief that he’s ok.

‘Oh no, that must have been bloody scary! Hope you’re OK Mikey!!’ Grant wrote.

‘Glad you’re ok,’ Jen said, while Chloe added: ‘Ooft Mikey, that must have been scary and sore. Glad you’re ok. You’re made of strong stuff!’

In response to Chloe, Hughes replied: ‘Bruises forming now I think but trying to keep moving, hopefully no clots will form but massive wakeup call.’

In addition to his time on Big Brother, Hughes also has a PhD and recently returned to stand-up comedy.
