A pregnant woman has died after being hit by an unmarked Met Police car.

Emergency services rushed to the incident on the A20 in Eltham, London, after receiving reports of a two-vehicle collision at 6.15pm on Thursday. Ambulance crews, London Fire Brigade and London’s Air Ambulance all raced to the scene, but a 38-year-old woman who was in the car tragically died.

She was heavily pregnant at the time and her baby did not survive, the Met Police said. Two officers who were in the unmarked car were also taken to hospital after the crash and have since been discharged.

The woman’s family has been informed. An investigation into the tragedy is underway.

As reported in the Mirror, Detective Chief Superintendent Trevor Lawry, in charge of policing in Greenwich, said: “My heart goes out to the woman’s family and friends who have lost their loved ones in these tragic circumstances. An investigation into the circumstances of this collision is underway by the Independent Office for Police Conduct and we will assist with their inquiries in any way we can.

“A road closure will remain at the scene today and I am grateful for the patience of the local motorists, who will need to use alternative routes.”
