Barry Ferguson reckons that Rangers could look at bringing Ryan Kent back to the club after Philippe Clement confessed to being an admirer.

The Belgian revealed that he attempted to bring the winger to Club Brugge before he made his move to Ibrox permanent and has only fuelled speculation that the 27-year-old could be destined for a return to the Scottish Premiership. The Liverpool kid has brought the curtain down on a nightmare spell with Fenerbahce after the Turkish giants ripped up the contract of the Englishman.

Jose Mourinho has barely given Kent a look-in since arriving in the summer – and speculation has now ramped up that the free agent could return to Rangers. He declined to be drawn into the rumour mill over any potential interest, but Ibrox hero Ferguson reckons that Clement’s words were telling.

He told Go Radio: “It’s interesting that Philippe Clement at his previous club tried to sign him. Listen, this is going to split the fan base. I look at his final season and he never really performed, if I’m honest with you, but on his day he was a match winner. I wanted to see a level of consistency you want to see from him, but he is a free agent and won’t cost any transfer fee. I’m sure he would have got paid off from Fenerbahce, so wait and see what comes of this.”

Ferguson also reckons that the wide man would have found it tough to leave Ibrox – and could make a move back for a lowball salary after a bumper exit payday from Fener. He went on: “I’m sure he was torn coming to the end of his Rangers contract.

“Rangers obviously wanted to keep him and he has went to Fenerbahce on a high salary, there is no doubt about that, but it has clearly not worked. What Ryan Kent has to do is find the right club and become the player that I think he could be. It’s going to be interesting, obviously Philippe Clement likes him and I’m sure there will be a few clubs looking at a player of Ryan Kent’s quality.

“Maybe he has came to an agreement with Fenerbahce and he has been paid up until the end of the season. I don’t know for sure, but if you are going to get him for buttons it may be something you have to look at.”
