DENVER (KUSA) – A family in Colorado can continue on their road trip after their child has been returned to them.

Earlier this week, a tow truck driver towed a car that their 11-year-old boy was sleeping in.

“It did not wake the kid at all, and he slept, slept all the way through,” John Romero, public information officer with Lakewood police, said.

It was the kind of sleep only an 11-year-old who stayed up all night playing video games could manage.

“The kid had been playing Fortnite all through the night since they knew they were going on a road trip,” Romero said.

The boy’s parents let him sleep in the back of the car while they were finishing washing their clothes in the hotel.

But the vehicle ended up getting towed away.

“When we arrived, there was a mother who was screaming that her son had been taken,” Romero said. “So, immediately out of an abundance of caution, we treated it as a kidnapping.”

Luckily, what they thought was a possible kidnapping turned out not to be the case.

“He probably just looked like a shadow back there, the child was wearing all-black clothing and was sleeping in the back seat with the big black blanket over him as well. So, the driver was just as surprised, I think, as the child was when we showed up,” Romero said.

Unknowing of each other’s presence for the whole 25 drive to the tow yard.

“The child had not woken up yet. We actually had to bang on the window to get him to wake up,” Romero said. “And he did not know where he was, he wasn’t sure what had happened because he slept the whole time.

Police ended up getting the boy back to his family – safe and sound but still a little sleepy.
