Aberdeen legend Willie Miller has shut down Brendan Rodgers over his feeling that Celtic should have left the sides top of the table showdown with a win.

It was a thriller as the top two in the Scottish Premiership locked horns – with the Dons having to claw back Celtic after they took a two goal lead in the first half thanks to goals from Reo Hatate and Kyogo. It was a revitalised Reds that Jimmy Thelin introduced for the second half as Ester Sokler pulled a goal back before Aberdeen captain Graeme Shinnie saw his effort deflect out of the reach of Kasper Schmeichel.

It leaves the pair level on points with the Hoops narrowly holding on to top spot on goal difference – but Miller was quick to point out that things could have gone very differently at Celtic Park. Speaking to BBC Sportsound, Rodgers felt that his side deserved to take the three points after letting a two-goal lead slip in Glasgow’s east end.

But Miller noted that the Reds had come within a VAR call of taking all three points back to the Granite City. Aberdeen defender Slobodan Rubezic met a free-kick in from the left that would cannon off of Duk and beyond Kasper Schmeichel with the game poised at 2-2.

But the forward would be penalised for handball and the effort chalked off by the team at Clydesdale House – a flashpoint Miller was quick to point out that Rodgers skipper over. Asked if he agreed with the Celtic boss that the hosts should have sealed the victory, Dons’ icon Miller said: “They created a number of opportunities, but Aberdeen had that goal chopped off.

“That seemed to bypass Brendan in the interview. It was very marginal as well. Yes, they had plenty of chances and you expect Celtic to create chances but Aberdeen stood firm, Mitov made some fantastic saves and that is what they are there to do.

“I just thought it was refreshing. You have got to give Jimmy Thelin and Aberdeen a lot of credit for coming here and making a toe-to-toe game of it.”
