For centuries, Antarctica’s unexplored barren landscapes have been a source for conspiracies, sometimes so far fetched that even Jules Verne would raise an eyebrow.
From a theory that Adolf Hitler survived after World War Two in a base under the ice, to another suggesting Antarctica is a wall that surrounds the Earth.
Both have been debunked by scientists, but in the age of the Internet and social media, all is fair game.
Google Maps sleuths now believe they have discovered a ‘door’ in Antarctica.
A screenshot was posted on Reddit’s Conspiracy channel, which boasts some 2.1million members.
It shows a glassy rectangular-shaped mass, partly buried under layers of snow.
Users were quick to take a stab at what this supposed door could be used for.
Some suggested it was an underground entrance to a camp, while others said it is a storage facility for seeds.
Whether jokes or legitimate theories – it was unclear as usual on Reddit – some said it was an entrance to Hitler’s hidden bunker.
According to the coordinates, it is just a few hundred meters from Japan’s Showa Station, a permanent research base on East Ongul Island in Queen Maud Land.
The Showa Station comprises more than 60 separate buildings, including living quarters, a power plant, sewage treatment facility, observatory and satellite building.
Also present are fuel tanks, water storage, solar panels, a heliport, water retention dam, and radio transmitter.

Eagle-eyed Google users claimed they had found a massive pyramid sticking out of snow used by aliens.
In 2019, the conspiracy theory community went wild after NASA images revealed a strange cloud pattern.
They claimed it was caused by new ‘sonic weapons’ NASA was testing on the frozen continent.
The flat earth community, who believe Earth is flat as a pancake, often use Antarctica as proof to their ludicrous claims, suggesting it is a wall which surrounds the earth.
