You’d expect your mum to be your rock on your wedding day, not the source of drama.

Weddings are meant to be joyous occasions where family and friends gather to witness the union of two individuals ready to embark on a lifelong journey together. Typically, brides and grooms are keen to have their closest family members there – particularly parents and siblings.

However, one groom’s big day took an unexpected turn when he had to eject his own mother from the ceremony due to her choice of guest. He had generously offered both of his divorced parents a plus-one option. Yet, rather than bringing her new spouse, his mother opted to invite someone far more controversial – his ex-girlfriend.

On Reddit, the 30-year-old shared he started seeing his current partner, whom he calls June for anonymity, around three years prior, but his mother disapproved, holding onto the belief that he should have remained with his previous girlfriend, Margo. Despite a five-year relationship with Margo, he was persuaded by friends and his sister to leave her after realising how “controlling and manipulative” she was.

Upon announcing his engagement to June, his mother appeared “suspiciously” serene, leading him to hope she had come to terms with his happiness. This illusion shattered on his wedding day.

He said: “After the ceremony, June and I went to take pictures and then met back with everyone we invited to the reception, which was pretty big. When we got there, my sister and June’s best friend ran up to us in a panic. Before they even said anything, I spotted it. My mum was at the table with my dad, my dad’s wife, and Margo.”

Incensed, he confronted his mother and Margo, asking them to leave, an action supported by his friends who escorted them out. His mother’s scene, claiming Margo was his “soulmate” and his wife was obstructing “getting in the way of true love” didn’t help matters.

Despite her attendance at the ceremony, the groom faced backlash for having his mother removed from the reception. Now questioning his decision, the groom found support online.

One commenter noted: “She tried to spoil your special day, and you had every right to ask her to leave. Kudos to June for supporting you so things remained calm and you were able to still enjoy the day. I wonder how all these ‘relatives’ would feel if your mum had pulled that on them?”

Another sympathised: “It wasn’t Margo who disrespected and violated your trust, although why she would look like a loser and go is something else. Your mother treated you and your wife with contempt and should have absolutely been thrown out. Actions have consequences, this was hers. Totally deserved it.”
