Curious about those colourful circles or squares on snack packets?

TikTok user Sonya Gonzalez Mier, who claims to be a food marketing expert, used the platform to explain the markings, frequently queried by consumers.

Sonya’s enlightening video went viral as she clarified that these are ‘colour control patches’ which are crucial for the printing process of packaging. “I work in food marketing and we have these colour patches on all our packaging,” she detailed, debunking theories that they might be barcodes or mysterious symbols.

“They are colour control patches, we need them because the colours that you see on the packaging are not actually the colours that we’re printing. Let me explain,” said Sonya.

She described how the true hues on packets come from overlaying multiple colours, with each patch representing an individual layer, reports the Express.

To maintain consistency, the patches are scrutinised: “To make sure the colours are correct, we look at the colour control patches and if they’re slightly off, we know that the whole packaging will be off.”
