Police in riot gear surrounded a Scots house after a pack of dogs savaged a tiny pooch to death – as its owner reportedly desperately tried to shield it.

Officers with shields and heavy protective clothing were seen at a corner flat between Mill Street car park and Burns Begg Street in Kinross with at least nine police vehicles were in attendance after the incident at around 2.30pm.

Police confirmed that they had been called after receiving reports of three dogs being attacked by other dogs in the town’s High Street and Burns Begg Street.

One dog died, reportedly a Lhasa Apso, and two were injured in the flurry of violence which also left a woman hurt and treated for minor injuries.

Witnesses said the woman was walking down the street when the dogs pounced.

One said: “They ripped (the dog) apart in front of her.

“They got it by the throat. It didn’t stand a chance.

“Its owner was screaming and screaming for help, but it was too late.”

They added: “She tried to pick it up and then lay across it, but then just kept going. There was nothing she could do. It was awful.”

One of the dogs is said to have bolted into the nearby High Street and pounced on another dog, leaving it badly injured, but fled after a hero shopkeeper kicked it away.

Police at the scene have refused to comment but told people to stay indoors and keep their animals in their homes.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 2.30pm on Sunday, 20 October, 2024, we were called to a report of three dogs having been attacked by other dogs on High Street and Burns Begg Street, Kinross.
