Answers are being sought over roadworks which have created a near 100-mile detour for motorists.

Amey has been carrying out work on the A75 at Mossyard and Auchenlarie near Gatehouse.

And overnight closures have led to motorists – including ferry traffic – who would be travelling between Castle Douglas and Newton Stewart instead being advised to go via Ayr and Girvan.

That means a journey which is usually 30 miles is now 96 and takes nearly two and a half hours, rather than 40 minutes.

Galloway and West Dumfries MSP Finlay Carson is now seeking urgent talks with Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop about the matter.

He said: “I have asked the Transport Secretary to meet with me quickly to discuss this matter especially as the full overnight closures plan is to last more than a month.

“The closures have already resulted in lengthy diversions, at times via roads that are totally unsuitable.

“Questions need to be asked about the capacity within Amey to carry these works out over a shorter timescale and with equipment which doesn’t necessitate full closure.

“I believe closures could be avoided by aligning schemes for example.”

The work began earlier this month but has paused for the school holidays.

Overnight closures will be in force again between 8pm and 8am from October 8 until November 2.

The detour Amey has advised drivers to take involves leaving the A75 at Castle Douglas, taking the A713 through Crossmichael, Parton, Dalry and Carsphairn to Ayr.

Motorists will then follow the A77 to Girvan where they’ll take the A714 to Newton Stewart, where they’ll rejoin the A75.
