TAZEWELL, Va. -A Halloween tradition returned to Tazewell County Fairgrounds on Saturday night, but this wasn’t your average fall event.

This is the annual ‘Monster Bash and Crash’ Derby, with cars and trucks of all shapes and sizes taking part in a variety of races. We asked one returning racer what makes him want to continue to take part.

“…Just adrenaline rush, fun, that’s all it is, just adrenaline rush. You get out there and have a good time, you get to hit people, you have fun, that’s it that’s all it is,” says James Buchanan.

There were even things for the kids, such as costumes and candy to keep with the Halloween spirit. The president of the Tazewell County Fair Association, Rhudy Keith, says the purpose here is to give kids and their families something they can do together, something that’s good clean fun.

“Well, the future depends on our children today, so if we can show them a good time without doing the other things that they’re capable of getting involved in, that way we have instituted one person or two or three to go forward and stay away from that and maybe those kids can encourage someone who is involved with bad doing, they can say, ‘you don’t have to do it, we can do this,’” explains Keith.

Despite the crashing vehicles, Keith says they do their best to keep this sport safe, with regulations in place to make sure the drivers are always leaving in better shape than their cars are.

If you would like to take part in this derby next year, Keith says you can to their Facebook page to learn more. He thanks everyone who came out to this, especially those volunteering their time to keep the racers safe.
