The latest Lanarkshire Philatelic Society meeting was an unusual one as there wasn’t a stamp in sight.

Instead, “Postcards” was the theme of the afternoon – and resulted in a “wonderfully interesting event”.

Members were taken to other parts of the world, with Brian Dow displaying the cruise ships of Hurtigruten which sail the Norwegian coast and into the Arctic.

Then Andy Napier gave a fascinating presentation of cards of Fiji – two cards each of the same view but some 20 to 30 years apart.

Maureen Mathieson was in Italy admiring the violently-erupting volcanoes of Mount Etna and Vesuvius and Robert Watt gave a tour of the island of Zanzibar (now part of Tanzania) with many homely views.

Murray Touche had cards symbolising “Nature of America”, showing illustrations of fish, birds and other animals.

But British shores weren’t forgotten as Derek Wiltshire came along with lovely views of Cardiff and cartoons of LlanfairPG, the station on Anglesey.

Graham U’ren praised the beautiful photography of Archibald Brown & Co, Terry Woods reminded members of some of the Lanarkshire Post Offices that have disappeared, David Brown was visiting Lochan Eilein, Rothiemurchus and the lovely views of Islay before Ken Liddell asked “What is a Postcard?”

Finally, Caroline Watt presented views of beautiful flowers, plants and flower arrangements.

President Alex Magowan expressed thanks to all for presenting “a most interesting and variable display of postcards”.

The society’s next meeting will take place in the Caledonian Bowling Club, Motherwell Road, Hamilton, on November 1 at 1.30pm, when guest Dr David Cumming, will present his display “Argentina Revisited’”.

Anyone with an interest in stamps, postal history, postcards etc is very welcome to attend.

Further details of the society’s programme, and much more information, can be obtained from its website.
