Two men have appeared in court charged with attempted murder and assault after an alleged attack on a man and a woman in Orkney.

Oscar Mayo and Kyle Christie both appeared in different courts in connection with the same incident, which took place last week.

They were arrested after a 38-year-old man and 39-year-old woman are said to have been attacked on Burnmouth Road, on the island’s town of Kirkwall.

Mayo, 22, was detained by Police Scotland officers first and appeared via video link at Inverness Sheriff Court on Friday, October 18, to face three charges.

As well as a charge of behaving in a threatening or abusive way, in breach of Section 38(1) of the Criminal Justice and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2010, he faces two other charges.

Prosecutors charged him with assault to severe injury and danger of life, and assault to severe injury, permanent impairment, danger of life and attempted murder.

Mayo, of Kirkwall, made no plea to the three charges against him and was remanded in custody as the case was continued for prosecutors to investigate further

Christie, 29, was detained later and appeared in person at Kirkwall Sheriff Court this afternoon, to face the same charges as co-accused Mayo.

The Orkney resident also made no plea to the three charges and was remanded in custody after the case was continued. No future court dates have been set, but a further hearing is expected next week.

Emergency services raced to the street in questionafter receiving reports of a disturbance on Tuesday, October 15. Crews attended and a man and woman were found injured.

The man was taken to the town’s Balfour Hospital for treatment, before being transferred to Dundee’s Ninewells Hospital, where he was said to be in a critical condition.

The woman, 39, was also taken to Balfour Hospital for treatment but her condition is currently unknown. Detectives confirmed they were treating the incident as attempted murder.
