Bruised Ally McCoist admits he can offer no counter-argument to Martin O’Neill’s searing takedown about a toiling Rangers side he no longer recognises.

The Ibrox icon is on the same page as Martin O’Neill after the former Celtic boss revealed his dismay about the standard of the current Rangers side – one he regards as a pale imitation to the one he locked horns with at the turn of the 21st century. And McCoist offered little resistance as the unflinching words aired by the Irishman resonated with the man who lives and breathes the club he represented with distinction.

McCoist – refused to name this Rangers team the worst over the past 30 years – but there wasn’t much else he wasn’t on the same page as O’Neill on. Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: “Well that (this being the worst Rangers team in 30 years) is up for debate as the fact of the matter is they went down to the Third Division. Everything else he says is 100 per cent right.

“It’s agony to hear but he’s right what he says.. There is a massive gulf between the teams at this moment in time. He’s also right that Rangers are capable of going there – or anywhere – and getting a result. But to do it consistently on a regular basis? Nah, miles off it. And I don’t think there’s going to be an immediate quick fix, sadly. That’s the problem. Martin, who generally and nearly always speaks an awful lot of sense, is probably spot on then, sadly.”
