BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Veterans Day Celebration is happening in Beckley on Monday, Nov. 11, the city announced. The Veterans Day Parade will be hosted by American legion Post 32 and the Beckley-Raleigh County Veterans Parade Committee.

The City said the theme will be “Duty-Honor-Country” as selected by American Legion Post 32. Cash and trophy awards will be given for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place best overall entries, along with the top high school and middle school bands. Awards will be presented at the Beckley Intermodal Gateway Plaza after the parade.

The parade isn’t the only celebration Beckley will do for Veterans Day, the City announced other events, as well as an essay contest. Beckley said Veterans Groups are welcome to set up a booth at the Beckley Intermodal Gateway plaza or at Word Park. Several school marching bands will perform after the parade on the Beckley Intermodal Gateway Plaza.

Veterans are also invited to enjoy a free box lunch at the WVU Tech Administration, Extension and Culinary Building on Neville Street after the parade, but the City said there is limited supply. The Raleigh County Veterans Museum is planning an open house at their new location on Eisenhower Drive.

There will also be an Essay Contest that will happen before the day of the Parade, and is a partnership between The Register-Herald and American Legion Post 32. They contest is for grades 6 through 8, and students are encouraged to write and submit an entry.

Prizes for the essay winners include:

  • $250 for first place
  • $150 for second place
  • $100 for third place

The winners will be chosen by the editorial team and announced in The Register-Herald on Saturday, Nov. 9. For the essay, students should write, in 500 words or less, what Veterans Day means to them. Entries can be submitted by email to [email protected], mail to RH Essay Contest, PO Box 2398, Beckley, WV 25801, or it can be dropped off at the newspaper office at 801 N. Kanawha Street in Beckley, and online at register-herald.com.

Deadline for essay contest entries is Nov. 4 at 9 a.m. The City said all entries will be published in the newspaper’s Veterans Day section. Entries must include the student’s name, school, grade, and contact info.
