A man allegedly stabbed to death outside a community centre in Hamilton has been named locally.

William Copland, 36, died inside Burnbank Centre, in the South Lanarkshire town, on Monday afternoon.

Police today revealed they had launched a murder probe and a 56-year-old man has been arrested.

Detectives say there is no ongoing threat to the public.

One person, thought to be a relative wrote: “RIP William Copland” alongside an image which stated: “Can I ask why the world is cruel”.

Another person said: “It’s so sad. Wullie was a good boy. It’s a shame what that family’s been through lately.”

A third added: “Condolences to the family.”

It’s understood a disturbance took place on the street outside moments before the tragedy.

It came just shortly after the area was busy with young children leaving primary school.

Officers remain in the area and there are some road closures in place on Whitehill Road and Purdie Street. The closures are likely to remain in place until around midday today to allow investigations to be carried out.

Members of the public are being asked to avoid the area. Images from the scene on Tuesday morning show the area taped off. The large cordon is surrounded by multiple emergency service vehicles.

Superintendent Richard Taylor said: “We believe this was an isolated incident and there is no danger to the public.

“We have an increased police presence in the area as we understand this could be a very upsetting and worrying time for the local community.

“Anyone with concerns is asked to speak to these officers.”
