Forensic officers are combing the streets outside a Scots community centre today after a man died and another was left injured.

Officers from Police Scotland are probing a horror attack in which a 36-year-old man was killed inside the Burnbank Centre in Hamilton.

Emergency services raced to the community facility after receiving reports of an alleged knife attack at around 5.30pm on Monday, October 21. A 59-year-old man was raced to hospital by ambulance following the incident, his condition is currently unknown.

Dozens of police locked down the streets surrounding the centre last night with Whitehill Road and Purdie Street being shut down. A 56-year-old man has been arrested following the incident which police are treating as murder and an attempted murder.

Today, detectives in forensic suits have been spotted scouring the area for clues.

Two officers could be seen examining a nearby bin, with pictures showing forensics probing a walkway that leads along to Purdie Street.

An officer can be spotted standing guard near a row of shops, with police tape secured across either side of the walkway.

The suspected knife attack has sent shockwaves throughout the local community, with Hamilton MSP Christina McKelvie saying she was “shocked and saddened” by the tragic incident.

The SNP politician who also represents Lanarkhall and Stonehouse said: “I am shocked and saddened to hear about this tragic incident in Burnbank which has led to a man losing his life and another critically ill in hospital.

“Police Scotland have assured me that they believe there is no wider risk to the public and they are progressing with their investigation.

“If you have any information that can help these investigations you can get in touch with Police Scotland on 101. I will continue to keep a close eye on the situation and work closely with Police Scotland and other partner organisations as required.”

Imogen Walker, MP for Hamilton and Clyde Valley added: “This has devastated our community and my heart goes out to the victim’s family and friends. This is an ongoing case and the police have my full support as they work to bring the perpetrator to justice.”

Members of the public are being asked to avoid the area whilst the probe continues. Police have asked any concerned residents to get in touch.

Superintendent Richard Taylor, Motherwell Police Station, said: “We believe this was an isolated incident and there is no danger to the public. We have an increased police presence in the area as we understand this could be a very upsetting and worrying time for the local community. Anyone with concerns is asked to speak to these officers.”

The Burnbank Centre is listed as an events hall that can be hired for parties, youth activities and other community groups.

The main hall can accommodate up to 150 people in concert style seating or 100 for catered functions. The venue also includes a soft play area.

A spokesperson for South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture, who operate the Burnbank Centre said: “We will do all we can to help police with their enquiries, but it would be inappropriate to comment further on an ongoing police investigation.”
