EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – Evansville Police say they have charged some people from New Jersey with “cemetery mischief” after they were caught trying to dig up a grave.

Officers say they were called to Oak Hill Cemetery shortly before 7 a.m. on October 8.

They were told four men and a woman were digging up a grave site.

Police say when an arborist asked them what they were doing, the woman told them it was her mother’s grave, and she needed something that was buried with her.

When the arborist told them they can’t do that, they group of people filled the hole and took off in a pickup truck.

Police say the truck was pulled over, and the driver told them he worked for a construction company out of New Jersey and his boss had a voodoo death curse placed on him.

The driver, who is from Guatemala, says his boss was told several voodoo related items were buried in Oak Hill Cemetery.

To break the curse, the driver and other employees was asked to find the items.

Police say the workers dug a hole that was about foot deep at the grave site of someone they didn’t know.

Cemetery staff had to bring in extra dirt to fill the hole.

Detectives say they spoke with the driver’s boss, who sent them the text messages from the “witch doctor.”

Police say they contained video of several skulls, dolls, and candles at a burial site.

They say the vegetation didn’t match any common to Evansville.

Detectives believe the man is a victim of a financial scam and acted out of fear.

The group has been banned from Oak Hill Cemetery.
