Visit Mercer County Brings “Leave No Trace” Program to Mercer County Schools.

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – A new educational program was announced for Mercer County Schools, and the program aims to teach 5th-graders responsible outdoor recreation habits and environmental stewardship.

Visit Mercer County said the new initiative is in partnership with the West Virginia Department of Tourism and the West Virginia Department of Education, and is titled “Leave No Trace.” The outdoor ethics curriculum will be for 5th-grade students across Mercer County Schools. In 45-minute sessions, Visit Mercer County said students will learn how to minimize their impact on nature, respect wildlife, and practice sustainability while exploring.

The goal of the program is to connect students with the outdoors and educate them on the importance of preserving nature for locals and visitors, Visit Mercer County said.

“Mercer County’s natural beauty is one of our greatest assets, and we are excited to share this message with our local students.” Jamie Null, Director of Visit Mercer County, said. “This program will inspire a sense of pride and responsibility for the community and help shape our future tourism leaders.”

Visit Mercer County said the program will help to make sure the county’s natural spaces are preserved for future generations.
