BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office says additional officers will be at an elementary and middle school after a student was heard yelling “He’s got a gun.”

According to the Buchanan Sheriff’s Office, on Oct. 22 at Riverview Elementary School, there was an incident where a student was heard yelling “He’s got a gun, he’s got a gun” in one of the hallways. The Sheriff’s Office said staff was around when the incident happened, and isolated the student that yelled and the other students in the area.

Students and lockers in the area were searched, but the Sheriff’s Office said no weapons were found.

The Sheriff’s Office said because no weapons were found, at no time were any students and staff in danger. The incident is being investigated, and extra deputies will be at Riverview Elementary and Middle schools out of an abundance of caution.

The Sheriff’s Office said they encourage parents and guardians to talk to their children about the importance of using language responsibly especially in a school setting.
