RALEIGH, N.C. (Gray News) – Nearly a month after Helene hit North Carolina, crews are still working to find at least 26 people who have been missing since the storm hit.

According to North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper‘s office, Helene hit the state as the “deadliest tropical storm in the state’s history.”

As of Monday, the state confirmed 95 deaths and 26 people who are still missing. A total of 765 people in the state were rescued.

According to the governor’s office, there are still 5,000 people without power, but that number is down from more than one million and most of the cell phone coverage has been restored.

North Carolina’s Department of Transportation has also opened 789 of the approximately 1,200 roads that were closed due to Helene.

The governor’s office said that only seven school districts remain closed, but two are scheduled to reopen this week.

The widespread damage left by Helene last month has made it one of the worst storms in the history of the United States.
