BBC Breakfast’s usual morning schedule was briefly interrupted on Wednesday as co-presenter Jon Kay announced a significant update concerning the Royal Family.
“It’s coming up to quarter past seven, Wednesday morning and Wednesday evening in the Pacific. King Charles and Queen Camilla have just arrived on the island nation of Samoa, where they are attending a Summit for the 56 Nation Commonwealth; there we go,” an enthusiastic Jon reported.
His co-host Sally Nugent added: “Of course, you will know they have been on a six-day tour of Australia, which we have been covering here on the programme, and they touched down just a few minutes ago. We were expecting them within the last half hour or so, and as we can see, that is their plane.”
The significant moment was highlighted with a “breaking news” banner flashing across the screens of viewers as live footage showed the royalty deplaning was aired. Sally described the proceedings, saying: “The King and Queen arriving,” as Jon supplied further details: “They said in advance they couldn’t wait to arrive in Samoa for this state visit,” as per reports by the Express.
“They said they were looking forward to experiencing the warmth of the country’s ancient traditions.”
The cameras broadcast King Charles and Queen Camilla being greeted by officials, while Jon emphasised the significance of their journey. He commented on the packed itinerary, stating: “There is going to be a lot of official work to do, this head of government conference, which happens every couple of years somewhere.”
Reflecting on the forthcoming event, he remarked: “They have gone about as far as they could possibly go for the next one.”
Sally warmly introduced their colleague Katy Watson who was live from Samoa with a segment for BBC Breakfast. “Good morning, Katy,” she said.
“So what can we expect to happen over the coming days? ” Providing updates straight from the scene, Katy explained: “This is his first trip to Samoa, and this is the first time he has attended the Summit since becoming King. It is also a first for a small Pacific nation in hosting.”
She emphasised Samoa’s spot in the limelight: “It is something important here for Samoa, it is a small country hoping the spotlight is really put upon this country.”
Katy went on to discuss the primary concerns set to be tabled at the summit: “Now, top of the agenda will be climate change, it is something very close to the King, a big interest of his and here in this region, it is a big issue. This area is one of the most vulnerable when it comes to rising sea levels.”
After showcasing footage of the King being welcomed by Samoa’s Prime Minister and police, the programme cut back to Jon in the studio, where he commented: “That is the first time we have been live in Samoa at breakfast time.”
Wrapping up, Jon commended the sovereign’s health: “It’s good to see the King looking well.”
