SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A fisherman reeled in a swordfish off the coast of San Diego that may just be one for the record books, weighing in at more than 660 pounds.

Fisherman Luc Ofield spent five hours Sunday afternoon reeling in a swordfish that weighed 663.8 pounds. He says the effort left him tired.

“Tired from squatting for five hours because when you are in a harness, you are hooked up to the fish. You have a big metal pad, and you literally lean back on the fish and squat,” he said.

But Ofield’s hard work paid off. He not only caught the fish, but he may break a state record. According to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the current record is 520 pounds. That swordfish was caught in San Diego last October.

“It seems unreal really. It was a very, very strong fish,” Ofield said.

Ofield plans to store the main part of the fish for three days and use everything else, making sure nothing goes to waste. He has been fishing since he was a kid and owns a tackle store in the Point Loma neighborhood.

“Fishing is special. It is different. It is getting away from everything. You never know what you are going to hook,” he said.

Ofield plans to submit all the paperwork by the end of the month and will freeze the fish, which could last up to a year.
