East Kilbride ‘Gerihatricks’ have proved they are still game after celebrating a big milestone earlier this month.

The town’s walking football club have just marked their 10th birthday with a special anniversary dinner for members past and present, and widows, at the Coppertrees Restaurant in Hairmyres.

The venue opened especially for the club’s benefit, as they marked 10 years to the day of their big launch back on October 14, 2014.

The ‘Gerihatricks’ are based at the Alistair McCoist Complex in Whitehills and play three times a week, with most members aged 60 and over, and they are looking forward to many more years of success.

Club spokesman Frank Parker said: “Our club was the first walking football club in East Kilbride and one of the first in Scotland. At present, we have 60 active members, from the age of 60 to 82 and I help organise social events each month.

“Walking football sounds straightforward but new members need to understand the playing rules, and the physicality on exercising and using muscles that have not been used for a while. Bottom line is it is for fun and keeping us active in a game we love.”
