KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) – A man shot and killed by Kanawha County deputies on Tuesday evening has been identified.

According to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office, Phillip Scott Duelley, 41, was shot and killed by law enforcement on Oct. 22.

“When they chased the man into the woods, they found him hiding in the woods, and they quickly identified what appeared to be a firearm,” Sgt. Joshua Lester said. “The man was holding the firearm, pointed to his head, or what appeared to be a firearm pointed to his head, and then he was refusing to drop it with the officer’s commands.”

Duelley was pronounced dead at the scene in the 1000 block of Snowbird Drive in Malden.

The incident was reported around 6:45 on Tuesday evening.

When deputies and Charleston Police Officers arrived, Duelley, who was wanted by law enforcement, ran into the woods.

A Charleston Police Department officer ended up shooting the suspect after he failed to follow the officer’s commands to drop a firearm he was holding. Investigators say the man pointed a gun in the direction of officers who felt “their lives were in immediate danger.”

“If you’ve ever been involved in a critical incident like that, I have, unfortunately, I’ve been there, you go through a whole gambit of emotions,” Deputy Chief Joe Crawford. “Your adrenaline is pumping, you’re really focused, you’re paying attention to detail, you’re trying to do your job.”
