While the winter months bring with them the joy of cosy fires and festive cheer, they also deliver a host of health woes.

Illness is a major concern during this season, with numerous viruses and bugs already doing the rounds. However, one NHS doctor has shared a tip on how we can combat this.

Doctor Shireen, known as @doctorshireen on TikTok, suggests that there’s one tablet every Brit should start taking from now to help fend off illnesses. She reveals that from October, GPs recommend everyone in the UK to start taking Vitamin D until March.

This simple supplement, which can be purchased for as little as £6.99, can significantly boost your health during the winter months. This is due to the “days being too short” at this time of year, resulting in insufficient sunlight exposure.

Doctor Shireen explained: “There is not enough sun right now to maintain your Vitamin D level. I mean, if you cover, if you work indoors, if you don’t see much sun throughout the year, take Vitamin D all year around but regardless – whatever your lifestyle is – right now from October to March you need to be taking Vitamin D.”

She added: “We usually recommend 400, 800, 1,000 units a day, as long as you’re taking it. One of the main benefits of Vitamin D is the impact it can have on your immune system, and obviously it’s winter now.

“We are heading into winter anyway and coughs, colds, viruses – they are everywhere. You want to do everything you can to boost your immune system.”

The GP highlighted that the simple supplement not only aids in bone, heart, brain health and muscle function, but can also elevate mood and energy levels, making it a beneficial tablet to consider.

Doctor Shireen pointed out a noticeable decline in Vitamin D levels among people due to the lack of sunshine this past summer, something she routinely checks when patients express concerns about low moods.

Since sharing her video, which has garnered more than 1,000 views, there’s been several comments from viewers. Many have shared their experiences with taking the supplement.

One individual commented: “My mum and I were taking it for years every day.” Another queried: “I take a daily multivitamin all year around. Should I take additional Vitamin D during the winter?”

A third person offered a contrasting account, writing: “Even in the summer, my levels are low. They’re practically non-existent at below 14.”

For those uncertain about the appropriate amount of Vitamin D intake, it’s recommended to get levels checked. The NHS warns against excessive consumption of Vitamin D supplements over extended periods, as it could lead to hypercalcaemia – excessive calcium in the body, which might weaken bones and harm the kidneys and heart.

A daily dose of 10 micrograms is generally sufficient for most individuals seeking to take the supplement.

It’s advised that no one should exceed a daily intake of 100 micrograms (4,000 IU) of vitamin D as it can be detrimental to health. This guideline applies to adults, including those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, the elderly and children aged between 11 and 17.
