A Paisley man has been jailed for more than eight years for the attempted murder of a Renfrewshire schoolboy.

Evil William Stewart viciously drove his car at the 12-year-old following an incident in the town on October 12, 2022. The youngster was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow with serious injuries.

Yesterday, at the High Court in Glasgow, the 70-year-old was jailed for eight years and six months for the attempted murder of the child in Ben Alder Drive in the town. He had earlier been found guilty of the offence by a majority verdict following a trial at the High Court in Paisley.

Stewart was remanded in custody following the trial. His sentence was backdated to his date of remand last month.

At the time of the incident, the Paisley Daily Expressreported police — including forensics — were at the scene investigating what happened into the night. The street was cordoned off while officers tried to piece together the events of earlier in the day.

At the time, a Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police received a report of a crash on Ben Alder Drive in Paisley involving a car and a 12-year-old pedestrian around 2pm on Wednesday, October 12.

“The 12-year-old boy was taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow for treatment for serious injuries.

“A 68-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with this incident and he is due to appear at Paisley Sheriff Court on Friday, October 14. A report will be forwarded to the procurator fiscal.”
