Threave Rovers are aiming to be TV stars tomorrow night.

The Castle Douglas side face Stranraer in a Scottish Cup clash being shown live on BBC Scotland.

And gaffer Danny Dunglinson is hoping his side can emulate the heroics of Darvel, who eliminated Premiership giants Aberdeen back in 2023.

He said: “It’s a free hit for us, we’re not expecting them to win the game but Darvel against Aberdeen is the benchmark for every non-league team in Scotland.

“In a one-off game anything can happen, there’s no reason we can’t cause a shock. We’ll give it our best shot.

“One or two played first team football at Queens and have been on BBC Alba but for the majority of the boys it’s the first time on TV.

“I was speaking to Ritchie Maxwell and Lewis Sloan, we’ve played together for 15 or 20 years and never got this opportunity.

“For some of the boys who are 17 or 18, to have it this young is a massive opportunity for them. It’s one they need to take in and not let pass them by.

“There’s a buzz about the place and BBC were down at training on Monday to film some stuff.”

Ross Thomson and Harry Officer are hoping to shrug off injury and illness to play, while striker Aiden Kerr hopes to make the big match.

Dunglinson explained: “He’s on holiday and gets back on Friday morning. He’s away with his partner and had to get a flight a day early so he can make the game. I think he’s the only one who’s gutted it’s Friday night on TV!

“As long as his flight isn’t delayed he should be back for Friday.”

Threave have already produced some stunning cup results this season, with West of Scotland Premier sides Glenafton Athletic and Benburb dispatched along with Lowland League outfit Berwick Rangers.

However, on Saturday they experienced the other extreme as they were thumped 6-0 by Greenock – despite the score only being 1-0 at half-time.

Dunglinson said: “The boys played the way I set them up and I told them to play. They’ve never done anything I haven’t asked them to do, I probably got it wrong myself. It’s no real fault of the boys.

“I’ll take full responsibility. It’s my first season in management so it’s a learning curve for me as well.

“We had a good chance at 0-0, Tam Coles was through and the goalie made a good save. They were dangerous off set pieces and it’s obviously something they’ve worked on as they tried three or four different variations.

“They scored just before half time, which was obviously a good time for them, and then they got the second and third goals quite close together and it just knocked the stuffing right out of us.

“It was 4-0 after 95 minutes and ends up being six. Four is still bad but six looks so much worse – I’d rather we just accepted it and to lose the last two was a bit of a sucker punch.

“The only blessing was it’s not happened live on the TV!

“It’s not ideal ahead of what is probably the biggest game in Threave’s history, but it could have the opposite effect.

The boys have been getting a lot of praise, not just internally but externally as well. Maybe this is just the wee bump to bring us back down and it might help us come Friday.”
