Long-haul flights are increasingly popular as Brits jet off for some winter sun in the southern hemisphere. However, experts have issued a warning about one activity travellers should never do on these flights, no matter how bored they get.

A trend has emerged on TikTok where influencers promote doing skincare routines mid-flight to land looking fresh and clean. But dermatologist Bella von Nesselrode warns this is a big no-no.

Airplane seat headrests can be a hotbed of sweat, oil, and dirt from previous passengers, leading to bacteria build-up that could clog pores and cause breakouts. The confined, often unclean plane bathrooms and the area around your seat can also harbour bacteria, making it best to avoid skincare routines like cleansing.

Instead of doing your skincare in your seat or in the bathroom, you should try not to touch your face at all to prevent the transfer of bacteria. Regular hand sanitisation is also key.

Bella shared her top five tips for protecting your skin on a long-haul flight with Travel Republic. The most crucial advice is to keep your hands clean and avoid touching your face, reports Bristol Live.

Wearing little or no makeup on your flight to allow your skin to breathe is also recommended.

Maintaining a light makeup application can prevent your pores from becoming blocked, which could lead to breakouts. Upon boarding the flight, it’s advised to clean the headrest, tray table and your mobile phone with an antibacterial wipe as these are common sources of contamination.

Bella also suggests performing your skincare routine prior to boarding the plane to ensure your face is thoroughly cleansed before your lengthy journey.
