The Foreign office has issued a new safety warning for any Brits either travelling to or currently in Sri Lanka.

The island, located in South East Asia, is a popular tourist destination thanks to its stunning landscapes and sprawling beaches adorned with wildlife and culture. But the government has this week raised the alert on a “heightened” threats of terrorism due to growing global political tensions, specifically the current conflict in Israel and Occupied Palestinian Territories.

Updating its Sri Lanka travel advice on Wednesday (October 23), The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) states that “terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks”. As such, UK passport holders are being urged to avoid large crowds, stay vigilant and follow local advice.

It reads: “Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreign nationals such as hotels, tourist sites and places of worship. Avoid crowded public places, large gatherings and demonstrations.

“Stay aware of your surroundings at all times, keep up to date with local media reports and and follow the advice of local authorities.

“The current conflict in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories has led to heightened tensions around the world. Terrorist groups such as Al-Qaida and Daesh, have called on their supporters to carry out terrorist attacks in response to the conflict. The conflict could also motivate individuals to carry out attacks.”

In addition, The US Embassy has advised their citizens to avoid the Arugam Bay area, a popular surfing destination for visitors, until further notice.

The FCDO has also changed its guidance for anyone planning to visit Turkey. It comes after the country endured a shocking terrorist incident on Wednesday (October 23) where an attack on an aerospace firm in Kahramankazan, roughly 40km from the capital Ankara, resulted in at least five fatalities and 22 injuries.

On Thursday (October 24) , it warned that people will face more stringent measures at Turkish airports. Similarly to Sri Lanka, the FCDO also urges citizens in the vicinity urged to pay attention to local advice and keep up-to-date via news outlets
