Rangers flop Pedro Caixinha is reportedly in contention to land the top job at Brazilian state champions Gremio.

The 53-year-old, who’s infamous stint at Ibrox in 2017 lasted just 26 games and included a humiliating exit to Luxembourgianminnows Progres Niederkorn in qualifying for the Europa League, has been in charge of fellow Brazilian club Red Bull Bragantino – part of the Austrian energy drinks global football franchise – since December 2022, leading the team to a third place finish in the Sao Paulo state championship last year.

But according to Brazilian outlet ‘Band’, the well-travelled Portuguese coach has been offered the managerial position at Gremio. They add that despite leading the team to back-to-back Rio Grande do Sul state league titles, current boss Renato Portaluppi’s future is unclear, and that Caixinha – who has one year remaining on his deal at Bragantino – is the leading candidate to replace him if an agreement can be reached.

Gremio have won 65 major honours in total (including three prestigious Copa Libertadores crowns) and are ranked by Forbes magazine as the third-most valuable football club in the Americas with an estimated value of $295.5 million (£228 million). They currently sit just one place and one point above Bragantino in the Brazilian top-flight table with just eight games remaining. Caixinha’s side are just three points above the relegation zone and suffered a 1-0 away defeat to Vitoria on October 19. The one-time Gers boss’ 14 years in management have seen him take charge of clubs in seven different countries: Portugal, Qatar, Mexico, Scotland, Saudi Arabia, Argentina and Brazil.
