BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – The City of Bluefield has issued a resolution recognizing the 100th anniversary of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church building on Wyoming Street.

Celebratory activities are set this weekend to mark 100 years since the cornerstone for the building was laid, although the church was organized and worship serves started in 1889, the same year the city was incorporated.

The resolution said the first full-time priest was named in 1894 when the church met at the Bluefield Inn on Princeton Avenue and the first church building was constructed on North Mercer Street and dedicated in 1895.

But as the church grew a larger space was needed and the present church was built.

The church was constructed from native stone, quarried from Stony Ridge and built of the medieval Spanish Gothic design, with an altar design as used in the Church of St. Vincent Ferrer in New York City.

The Board of Directors in the resolution said the city proclaims that 2024 will officially be recognized as the centennial year of the laying of the cornerstone of the church.

Church leaders Bob Buzzo and Ron Ciccolini accepted the resolution.

Activities this weekend include tours of the church and school building on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Mass on Sunday at 4 p.m. and a celebratory dinner at Fincastle at 6 p.m.
